ARB eyes cutting wait time

Eileen Keithly/For South Strand News Dwayne Vernon, a board member and architect for a project at 624 Front Street,  Mr. Vernon addresses the board as the property owner’s architect.

It was the general consensus of the The City of Georgetown’s Architectural Review Board Monday, during a short discussion, that some “procedural tweaking” needed to take place to facilitate routine projects.

“It is a real handicap for the owners and architects to wait 45 days when a minor problem presents itself,” board member Jean Rothrock said.

“We need to find a way to assist the citizens of Georgetown, and cut down on the wait time for approval, especially when it is something that city staff could approve,” said Chairman Jerry Miller, who asked the board members to check their calendars and report back with possible dates they would be available for a workshop on the issue.

The board approved a request for a change in materials to a handicapped ramp on Front Street, and members called for a special workshop to expedite approvals for similar minor projects.

In the only business action item on Monday evening’s agenda, the board approved a request by Dr. Mike McGinnis for a change in materials for a handicapped ramp at 624 Front St.

The house at the location, built in 1920, is planned for use as a dentist’s office.

After recusing himself from consideration of the issue as a board member, project architect Dwayne Vernon explained the need for the change in materials to the board.

Seeking the advice of city staff, the board turned to Janet Grant with the Department of Housing and Community Development. Grant said the project had been reviewed by city staff and was recommended for approval.

The board, with member H.E. Bonnoitt Jr. absent, voted unanimously to approve the change.
