Hemingway man charged with criminal sexual assault with a minor

A former schoolteacher has been charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor - third degree. According to reports, Charles Leo Demay, 78, of East Society Street in Hemingway, was arrested Wednesday, May 7, after the victimís family reported the incident to Hemingway police.

According to a Williamsburg County Sheriffís Office Booking Report Demay was also charged with disseminating obscene material to a person under the age of 18 and providing persons under the age of 18 with tobacco products. However Hemingway Police Chief Bryan Todd added the charges have been upgraded to criminal sexual conduct with a minor - second degree and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Both warrants were served Friday, May 9, according to Todd.

Chief Todd refused to release the incident report citing the nature of the information. During a Monday, May 12, telephone interview with Todd he said the incident occurred at Demayís residence. He said after the alleged incident occurred the victim returned home and told a family member. The family member then contacted the police.

Todd said after being maranderized, Demay was subjected to a taped interview. During the interview Demay admitted to the assault. At that time he was arrested and was booked into the Williamsburg County Detention Center where he remains.

Criminal sexual conduct with a minor - second degree is a Class C Felony and can carry up to 20 years in prison. Disseminating harmful materials to a minor is a Class F Felony and can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. The Hemingway Police Department continue to investigate the case.
