Provided Vida Miller speaks to Preston Brittain and his wife, Elizabeth, before she took to the podium.

Former South Carolina Statehouse member Vida Miller, a Pawleys Island Democrat seeking to regain her seat this year, received a big surprise as she attended the annual Galivants Ferry Stump Monday.

After Miller gave her speech, her boyfriend – former Georgetown County Sheriff Michael Carter – asked her to marry him.

Miller said “yes” but told the crowd no wedding will take place before the November election. Miller’s former husband, J.D. Miller, passed away in December, 2009.

The Stump in Galivants Ferry takes place every two years and is a chance for Democrat candidates to speak one-on-one with potential voters. It has been taking place since 1876.
