Local business holds fundraiser for Easter fire victims

Anita Crone/For South Strand News Karl Marzolf sits in his restored 1965 Mack fire engine.

Karl Marzolf brought his pride and joy. Other firefighters and their friends brought their cash and charge cards. Together, more than 250 people Sunday opened their wallets and their hearts to the survivors and their families of two fatal fires in Garden City Beach and Murrells Inlet.

“It’s just an outpouring from the community,” said Chris Battlo, as he made sure there was plenty of food and fellowship. Battlo, a firefighter/paramedic with the Murrells Inlet-Garden City fire department, was among those in the departments professional firefighters association sponsoring the event.

If people missed the sign promoting the Sunday afternoon fundraiser, they could hardly avoid Marzolf’s 1965 Mack fire truck.

Shiny and pristine, the truck took him four and a half years – an estimated 3,500 hours – to bring back to its glory.

Marzolf said that he totally disassembled and reassembled the truck, inside and out, and he finished it in 2013, “just in time from the state fireman’s convention.”

He brings out the truck for special occasions, including parades and funerals.
