Thompson leads Bulldogs over James Island

Chris Sokoloski/South Strand News Georgetown High’s Cody Thompson, pitching earlier this season, gave up only one hit on Friday to lead the Bulldogs over James Island.

Senior Cody Thompson pitched a near-perfect game Friday night in the first round of the Class AAA District 7 playoffs to lead Georgetown High to a 3-0 win over James Island Charter.

The first batter of the game had the Trojans’ only hit of the night.

It wasn’t just the lack of getting on base that was a problem for the Trojans. Three James Island errors over two plays resulted in two Bulldog runs, and a concussion for the James Island second baseman.

After Brandon McCants drove in Tres James for Georgetown’s first run, the James Island shortstop was unable to cut off a throw from the catcher to prevent McCants from stealing second and the ball ricocheted off his mitt and struck senior Davis Sanders in the forehead at speed, briefly knocking him unconscious.

Senior Kevin Woodall scored on the play to give Georgetown a 2-0 lead.

EMTs were called and Sanders was carried off on a gurney with an initial diagnosis of a concussion.

According to Trojans assistant coach Jeremy Hall, it was a concussion, and the CAT scans came back negative.

However, problems continued in the sixth inning for James Island when Georgetown’s Brandon Cribb made it to first base on a Trojans throwing error, and runners advanced to second and third on another error.

Woodall then drove in Cribb on a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead.

Thompson then struck out two in to finish off the Trojans in the top of the seventh.

“It felt great,” said Thompson, who is verbally commitment to USC-Salkehatchie. “It could be one of last games I pitch here, and it felt great to go out with a bang like that. I’ve had similar games, but nothing compares to the caliber that a playoff game has, and it feels good to go out and perform like that.”

It was Georgetown’s first playoff win since 2008.

Seth Wall, Mark Alan Nash and Tyler McAllister all had hits for the Bulldogs.

Georgetown then went to Gilbert on Monday night and lost 3-1.

The Indians capitalized on Bulldogs errors to score all their runs in the first inning.

Georgetown and James Island will play tonight at Mike Johnson Park. The winner will travel to Gilbert on Friday night and will have to beat the Indians twice to advance to the Lower State tournament.
