This is the gator spotted on Sandy Island Road Sunday

A leisurely trip from Myrtle Beach back to his home in Charleston turned into some interesting moments for S.C. Rep. Wendell Gilliard when he decided to take quick detour to see the boat landing for Sandy Island.

He said he has been trying to help the residents of the island obtain funding for a new ferry boat so he decided to show a friend he was with the landing where the ferry is docked.

It was as they were leaving, they saw something much more interesting than a boat.

“When we were leaving and I turned back onto Sandy Island Road, I saw this huge thing and it was taking its time crossing the road,” Gilliard said.

That “thing” was a big alligator that was crossing Sandy Island Road. Once it reached one side of the road it turned around and walked back to the other side.

He said he asked his friend to use her phone to record that slow-moving gator.

Gilliard said he has seen many alligators in his life.

“I have never seen one that big. Never in my life,” he said.
