Chris Sokoloski/South Strand News Surrounded by his family and members of the Andrews High School community, Ethan Wright signs to play baseball at the University of South Carolina - Beaufort on Monday afternoon.

Andrews High School’s Ethan Wright signed to play baseball at the University of South Carolina – Beaufort on Monday afternoon.

Wright is thrilled for the chance to keep playing baseball.

“It’s what I’ve always wanted to do,” he said.

Yellow Jackets coach Roland Clemons said the team will “dearly miss” Wright next year.

“I’m so proud of him,” Clemons said. “The amount of work he’s put in has paid off. He’s going to a good school and they [are] going to benefit.”

Wright also quarterbacked the Andrews football team, but that was his secondary sport.

“Baseball has always been there first,” Wright said. “I love everything about it. I grew up with it. It’s my favorite thing to do out of school.”

Wright’s favorite Andrews baseball memory is winning three region titles in a row.

Clemons remembers Wright as a seventh-grader.

“He had a live arm and [was] athletic,” he said. “We knew we had something special.”

Clemons called Wright a “great kid” who blossomed into a great leader in his senior season.

“He leads more by example … He’s really vocal. He just started being a little bit more vocal this year,” Clemons said. “He does the right thing. He comes to practice every day with the right attitude. He gets after it.”

Wright and the Yellow Jackets just started the Class AA playoffs this week.

His advice to younger teammates who want to play ball in college: Work hard on the field and in the classroom and be coachable.

His coach agreed.

“Put in the same amount of work. That’s what it’s all about,” Clemons said. “You can’t get there without the classroom.”
