Coach Lynn Hunt and the Waccamaw High’s boy’s tennis team has been battling the rain this season.

Looking forward to a tennis-filled week, the Warriors only completed two of three scheduled matches as Wednesday afternoon thunderstorms washed away the highly anticipated rematch with arch rival Bishop England.

The Battling Bishops beat the Warriors earlier this season for the first time in 14 years. Wednesday’s cancelled match will have to be rescheduled before Thursday, when regional playoffs begin.

The outcome of that match will determine which team has the home court advantage for the playoffs.

On Monday, Socastee head coach Kirk McQuiddy led a focused and undefeated Socastee team to a 4-3 defeat over the Warriors, whose No. 1 player, Justin Dunn, could not play because of an injury.

“We always look forward to a very competitive match with Waccamaw,” McQuiddy said before the match. “This will be interesting today. The Warriors are minus their No. 1 player … We weren’t expecting that, so we will see how things play out.”

As it turned out, the Warriors captured only one singles match, at No. 5, with Jaz Greene defeating Caleb Bellamy in a tie-breaker.

“Jaz displayed comeback fortitude after losing the second set to win the match with a deciding tie breaker, 10-7, over a feisty Caleb Bellamy,” Waccamaw coach Lynn Hunt said.

Joey Hewes played a noteworthy match against Britton Bellamy at No. 1, losing by only one service break each set, 3-6, 3-6.

The Waccamaw doubles teams made the contest closer by beating their opponents in eight-game pro sets.

Parker Brinson and Joey Hewes defeated Brent Glasgow and Robert Warstler 8-6 at No. 1, and Kevin Mushock and Jacob Hawkins defeated Chase Mullin and Amit Patel 8-6.

With dark clouds overhead the Stables Tennis Center on Tuesday, the Warriors swept region rival Mullins 7-0.

“Mullins is a team with raw talent and great athleticism, but mostly inexperienced players,” Hunt said.

Dunn returned to the Warriors’ lineup and played exceptionally, despite his injury from a weekend match.

The Warriors also fielded the young junior varsity team of Thomas Rowland and Lach Dancy at No. 2 doubles team, and they defeated Kenneth Harrell and Jaquentin Legette 8-1.

The Warriors return to the courts Tuesday against Porter Gaud at 4:30 p.m.

Georgetown

The Bulldogs lost two region matches this week.

The boys fell 6-1 to Wilson on Monday night.

Gabe Holmes and Brice Sanders got the only win at No. 2 doubles.

“The team was glad to have Brice back as he has suffered several injuries this season and not been able to participate,” said Grace George. “He is a big part of the team that we have been missing.”

On Tuesday night, the boys lost 6-1 to Socastee, the defending Class AAA state champions.

The only win for the Bulldogs came at No. 2 doubles from Holmes and Sanders.
