People across the country celebrated Easter on Sunday, but Pauline Legare had two celebrations in one.

On Easter Sunday Mrs. Pauline Legare turned 105 years old.

On Monday afternoon, the Tidelands Community Hospice threw Legare a birthday party with family, friends, and the staff.

“What better way to honor her life than to give her a birthday party,” said Shane Player, executive director of Tidelands Hospice.

“I met her a couple of weeks ago when she began her hospice care.”

“A lot of people get star struck with famous people, but she is the first person that I have ever met that’s 105 years old,” added Player.

Legare is on home care hospice.

On Monday afternoon Tidelands Hospice provided an ambulance to escort Legare to her birthday party.

The party was held in the dining room of the Tideland Hospice Home.

Mary Chinnes, the social worker, said she has been working with Legare for the past six months.

“She was 104 before she needed hospice care.”

“I enjoy working with her, and she’s always thinking about everyone else.”

“She is so gracious and very thankful for whatever you do for her,” added Chinnes.

Keshia Coleman, her nurse, said Legare is a pleasure to work with.

Legare sat at the table clapping her hands as they sang happy birthday to her.

She was so excited when her daughter lit the birthday cake, and she almost blew out all of the candles with one blow.

She said she took care of herself and she said the Lord has her here for some good reason.

“I don’t have any pain and my hearing is still good; it feels good being 105.”

She also credit her longevity from wisdom, and “I takes my time and don’t rush,” added Legare.

Her son-in-law Bernard King added, “she lets nothing bother her.”

In 2012, Georgetown Major Jack Scoville issued a proclamation naming Wednesday as Mrs. Pauline Victoria Sessions Legare Day.

Pauline Victoria Sessions Legare was born on April 20, 1909 in Conway.

She is the daughter of the late Tobias Sessions of Jacksonville, Florida and the late Mantha Ellenore Johnson Sessions of Conway. She is the middle child of 10 siblings all of whom are deceased.

She graduated from Howard High School and worked as a substitute teacher.

She also worked in the hospital and was a caregiver.

She married John Legare on June 5, 1938. They were married 32 years until he died in 1970.

The couple have three daughters: Bernice Fitzgerald, the late Geraldine Zenobia Evans, and Ann Hart King.

She is the grandmother of five children and six great grandchildren.

She is a lifelong member of Bethel AME Church in Georgetown and is one of the oldest members.

Legare served as an usher for many years at Bethel Church.

She is kind and a gentle lady who speaks very softly and always shares a smile.

Her hobbies are reading, and she loves doing crossword puzzles.

Her neighbor Ella Mae Grant is her caregiver at home and Hattie Green assists with her care.

“She calls me Nursey” and she still talks about the first President she voted for ... Franklin D. Roosevelt.”
