I don’t sweat, I sparkle

  • Wednesday, April 23, 2014

I love glitter. I love glitter nail polish. I love glitter paint. I love glitter on my clothes. I even love edible glitter. I do not think there is ever enough glitter.

One year for Valentine’s Day, I filled balloons with candy and glitter for the kids to give out to their friends. My poor kids had to carry a large black garbage bag full of balloons. I loved the idea of all those kids popping their balloons with glitter raining down to get their treat.

Parents of the kids who got those balloons probably didn’t love me so much that day. I blew up all 100 of those balloons myself and for about two weeks every time I blew my nose, I blew glitter. But, glitter is worth it.

My friends and family all joke about my love of sparkly things. And tease me that I would glitter anything that would hold still, which is probably true.

But one of the reasons I love glitter so much, is that it has the remarkable ability to change things. A small amount of glitter has a great ability to make even mundane things special. The transforming power of glitter is spectacular. It can make boring lamps shine. Turn a dollar bill into “princess money.” There are countless things in my house that I have glittered. And I am not the least bit sorry.

There are so few things in life that can make the ordinary into special. Who wouldn’t want more of that? I know I do.

We all get stuck in our routines. Life happens, over and over. We become stuck on auto pilot never really seeing the fun and interesting things that make up our lives. Sometimes, a glittered coffee mug or a glitter covered shirt can make us pause and see that even the simple things like our morning coffee can be really special. All we have to do is see it that way.

So, while my friends and family tease me about my glitter love, I joke about how I don’t sweat, I sparkle. And yes, maybe blowing your nose and having it be glittery is a bit much. Although, it did make me giggle each time I blew my nose, so really, glitter even made my cold more fun, sort of. Occasionally, I need to add a little glitter to spice up my routine. Or should I say sparkle up my routine?
