Warriors net doubleheader from Swamp Foxes

Waccamaw High’s boys tennis reached mid-season continuing its winning tradition by beating a good Marion High team in both ends of a doubleheader last week.

With only four matches remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are 5-4 overall, but are undefeated in region matches.

Lower State playoffs start on May 8 and the State Team Championships will be on May 17 in Columbia.

In the doubleheader against Marion, Justin Dunn dominated Tyler Williams 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.

Playing at No. 2, Joey Hewes controlled most points and defeated Matt Williams 6-0, 6-1.

Also noteworthy was the Warrior duo of eighth-graders Thomas Rowland and J.D. Tucker, who crafted a fine win over Matt Pridgen and Brian McQueen 6-4, 6-2.

Other scores: Ben Hewes defeated Zi Huang 6-1, 7-5; Woody Tudor beat Gabriel Thomas 6-1, 6-0 and Parker Brinson over-powered Brandon Sanders 6-0, 6-0 concluding a Waccamaw sweep of the first match of the doubleheader.

In the second match of the doubleheader, both teams agreeing to play eight game “pro sets” to save time.

The Warriors got off to a fine start with Joey Hewes beating Tyler Williams 8-1 at No. 1 singles.

Ben Hewes lost a close, hard fought match to Matt Williams 4-8 at No. 2.

Waccamaw’s Jaz Greene got the team back on track coming from behind to beat Zi Huang 8-6 at No. 3.

Kevin Mushock kept up the winning way by dominating Gabriel Thomas 8-1 at No. 4.

In the next match the contest got a little closer when WHS’s Parker Lipton lost a hard fought match to Brandon Sanders 6-8.

Waccamaw needed to win both doubles matches to secure the overall victory.

In Waccamaw style, the players came through as Justin Dunn and Joey Hewes proved unstoppable beating the Williams brothers 8-1. Next, the No. 2 doubles team of Spencer Kemp and Scott Johnson, both eighth-graders, displayed exceptional teamwork and outplayed their opponents, winning in convincing fashion 8-1.

Waccamaw faces Socastee, last year’s Class AAA State Champs, at home at 4:30 p.m. on April 28.
