Laura Dean of Georgetown signed a scholarship to play tennis at Kennesaw State University on Wednesday morning.

Ive been waiting on it forever so its nice that its done, said Dean, who is the daughter of Renee and David Dean.

According to the USTA, Dean is the No. 7 ranked player in South Carolina in her age group.

She signed her paperwork in the clubhouse at Wachesaw Plantation, where she has been training since she was 13.

Her coaches and fellow members of Wachesaws Playmakers Tennis Academy were on hand to celebrate with her.

I like the atmosphere, Dean said of Wachesaw. The coaches are great, they always support me.

Dean started playing tennis when she was 7.

I just liked being outside and having fun, she said.

When she was 13, she started doing well and getting noticed on the court, and started training at Wachesaw.

I realized I was doing something well and going somewhere with it, Dean said.

At 14 she started thinking about playing in college.

Dean stopped attending bricks and mortar schools when she was in sixth grade. She completed high school while enrolled in the S.C. Virtual Charter School.

Taking classes online gave her the flexibility to train about two to five hours every day.

She has cut back on her competition schedule, but she used to play in about two tournaments a month.

Dean is looking forward to enrolling at Kennesaw State, which is in Kennesaw, Ga.

I really like the coaches a lot and the girls on the team are nice, she said. I just thought it would be a good fit for me.

She plans to study criminal justice.
