Pawleys man seeks historic train photos

Nearly 36 years ago, a historic steam engine known as the Clinchfield No. 1 chugged into Andrews for the first-ever Lowland Fling. Now, Pawleys Island resident Mark A. Stevens is seeking photos of the train's appearance for use in a book due out this fall.

After a complete remodel in 1968 after spending 80 years on the rails, the Clinchfield No. 1 headed popular excursion trains to Kentucky, Virginia and the Carolinas from its base in Erwin, Tenn., from 1968 until 1979. At the time, the locomotive was the oldest operating steam engine for commercial use in the United States. In 1978, the Clinchfield Railroad agreed to send the locomotive and its multi-car excursion train to Andrews for a celebration of the town's own railroad history. It was as far east as the train had ever traveled.

While in the Lowcountry for the Lowland Fling and “Andrews Good Old Days,” more than 5,000 people rode the train, including Richard Riley, who at the time was candidate for his successful bid to become governor. A host of other politicians rode the train, as did many others, from children to retired railroaders out to ride behind a steam locomotive once more.

Stevens is searching for photos from the Clinchfield No. 1's time in Georgetown County to be used in an upcoming book for The History Press, a national publishing company based in Charleston.

“I am looking for any good quality image of the train, really,” Stevens said. “I would especially love photos that show the train with families or groups of people. I like photos that show more than just the locomotive, but the locomotive is, obviously, important to the overall photo.”

Submitted photos may be used in the book, but the use of the photos is at the discretion of the publisher and cannot be guaranteed. Personal stories and recollections of seeing and/or riding the special train are also welcomed.

The book is co-authored by A.J. “Alf” Peoples, a railroad engineer with CSX.

Stevens is a former editor and publisher of newspapers in Tennessee and Louisiana. He and his wife, Amy, moved to Pawleys Island in 2013. He is the author of several books, including another book he co-authored with Peoples about the Clinchfield No. 1, titled “The One & Only: A Pictorial History of the Clinchfield No. 1,” which is in its second edition and can be purchased through amazon.com.
