Six county schools earn Palmetto Gold

Six Georgetown County Schools have earned the highly-sought-after Palmetto Gold awards and two schools – Georgetown and Carvers Bay High – received the awards in two categories.

The winning county schools are: Waccamaw Elementary, Waccamaw High, Waccamaw Intermediate and Waccamaw Middle. These schools won gold in the general performance category.

Georgetown and Carvers Bay High won gold in that category as well as in the category “closing the achievement gap.”

The announcement was made Wednesday by Dr. Mick Zais, State Superintendent of Education.

The Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards program, founded in 1998, recognizes schools for general performance and closing the achievement gap. Within those two categories, a school may be awarded either the gold or silver designation. This is the sixth year that closing the achievement gap has been included as part of the program.
