Hundreds brave rain for annual Race for the Inlet

While heavy rain cut the expected field from more than 600 to slightly more than 200 brave souls, it didn’t stop competition Saturday in the annual Race for the Inlet.

A pair of Myrtle Beach residents — John Hynes and Jess Dennison — captured the 5K honors. Hynes, 39, finished in 17:53 and Dennison, 23, finished in 20:35.

Reed Winn of Pawleys Island won the 8K race in 35:42 and Beth Coen of Myrtle Beach captured the women’s 8K title in 37:16.

Age-group honors in the 5K race went to: Serena Elias of Myrtle Beach (25:31) and Asher Patino of Conway (29:43) in 10 and under; Michelle Baldassare, 15, of Stewartsville (21:16) and overall runner-up Grant Smith of Murrells Inlet (18:12) in 11-19; Heather Tilke, 29, of Conway (28:55) and Shane Norris, 24, of Myrtle Beach (22:11); and Kelly Key, 39, of Cary, N.C. (25:50 and Matthew Sauer, 32, of Mooresville, N.C. (20:29).

A pair of Inlet residents — Tonya Allison (24:01) and Brian Scully (21:19), both 41 — captured the 40-49 year old division.

Laurie Baldassare, 52, of Stewartsville (28:18) and Steve Brakefield, 53, of Murrells Inlet (25:26) won their division.

In the 60-69 group Patricia Ferguso of Myrtle Beach won in 22:42 and Robert Thomas of Matthews, N.C., won in 25:40. Delores Rafferty, 72, of Myrtle Beach captured the 70-99 division in a time of 49:29 and George Hagan of Murrells Inlet, 77, took first place among the 70-99 men in 30:52.

In the 8K, age group, victors included Cooper Hollandswort, 13, of Surfside Beach (46:40); Jacqueline Rucci, 24, of Myrtle Beach (38:59); Jeffery Gabriel, 28, of Conway (46:40); Abby McDowell, 34 of Myrtle Beach (39:11); Brian Colavecchio, 30, of Garden City (36:57); Sabina Monney, 44, of Lancaster (37:20); Jeff Sanders, 45, of Columbia (39:14); Scottie Ferguson, 51, of Greenville (44:45); Rich Black, 56, Murrells Inlet (39:32); Cathy Sivertsen, 67, of Myrtle Beach (57:55); Charles Whetstone, 64, of St. Matthews (41:46); and Jack Close, 70, of Murrells Inlet, (47:38).
