Lowcountry Prep School’s baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday, an 8-7 defeat by the St. John’s Cavaliers.

The Fighting Marlins loaded the bases in their final at-bat but couldn’t get the winning runs across.

“Errors can be the decision maker of a game,” said coach Kendall Buckner. “This happened to be the case in this game.”

Thomas Deschamps went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs and Wilson Grayson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Lowcountry Prep.

“Fundamentals are important in the game of baseball,” said coach Matthew Jordan. “If we can keep that as the core of our baseball team, then we are looking at a promising future to the Fighting Marlins baseball program. I’m proud to see players excel. It shows their commitment.”

The Fighting Marlins are now 4-1, and with only two games left in the season, they are assured of a winning season, only one year removed from a winless season.

Lowcountry Prep added basbeall to its roster of sports in 2013, and plans to build a baseball diamond on its Pawleys Island campus.

“This year’s baseball program has far exceeded our expectations,” said athletic director Jamie Prosser. “We did not anticipate this kind of success for at least another year or two. ... The school has enjoyed state championships in our other sports programs and look forward to adding baseball to that list.”

Lowcountry Prep’s girls soccer team is undefeated this year.

The Fighting Marlins defeated Coastal Christian of Mount Pleasant 6-1 this week.

Taylor Cook had three goals, and Marguerite McClary, Josie Mangialardo and Jessica Mangialardo each had one.
