Former Georgetown County economic director accused of embezzling more than $100,000

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office arrested former county Economic Development Director Wayne Gregory, charged with embezzlement. Gregory, 36, has been working as the economic director in Columbia. According to Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Carrie Cuthbertson, about a month ago investigators were notified by the Georgetown County Administrator's Office concerning a number of fraudulent purchases made by Gregory.Cuthbertson said the investigation revealed that between January 2010 and September 2013, Gregory "did use a Georgetown County purchasing card to misappropriate funds from Georgetown County."
 Investigators have determined that during his employment, Gregory was able to
embezzle more than $100,000 from Georgetown County and convert said funds for his own personnel use," she said.  Investigators traveled to Columbia today and met with Gregory at his residence where he was interviewed. Investigators, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Columbia Police Department executed a search warrant at Gregory's apartment. As a result of the investigation, Gregory was arrested and charged with Embezzlement of Public Funds over $10,000.00. Gregory is currently being transported to the Georgetown County Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
