Some parents were caught by surprise last week when they received a letter from their child’s school.
The letter was from the U.S. Department of Justice and was a short questionnaire that had to be signed and sent back to the school.
“The Department of Justice on your child(ren’s) address,” the letter states.
The questions asked on the form include students full name, parents names and street address.
Sherry Micheau, whose daughter attends Waccamaw Intermediate School said she thought it was ‘strange’ such a request would be coming from the Justice Department. She contacted the district office asking for an explanation.
She said she was sent a questionnaire because when the filled out her daughter’s form an abbreviation for ‘circle’ was used rather than spelling out the word in her address. “It’s still odd,” she said.
Georgetown County School District spokesman Ray White said each year the district has to provide the DOJ a list of the names and addresses of all students.
“They check them and sometimes they have questions about some of them,” White said.
White said about 200 students across the county received the questionnaire because of some issues noticed by the DOJ. He said most things were minor, such as misspelling a street name or using a Post Office box rather than a street address.
“They want a physical address,” White said.
He said some of the students may have been selected at random by the DOJ to receive the form.
“They did not tell us why they want to check them, but they do,” White said.
