Birding for beginners course at Hobcaw Barony

  • Monday, March 3, 2014

Participants of “Birding for Beginners” will gain basic knowledge and learn about important resources to use.

Hobcaw Barony is offering a 5-day introductory course on learning to identify birds by sight and sound, otherwise called “birding”. This program includes four classes and an early morning field trip out on Hobcaw Barony’s 16,000 acre property. The four classes will be held on Thursday afternoons, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. with the field trip being Friday, March 28 from 7 to 11 a.m. The cost is $75 per person and includes all 4 classes, the field trip, a birding book, and a bird song CD.

Many people enjoy the sight of colorful birds at their bird feeders, but aren’t aware at what species they’re seeing. “This class is perfect for those that want to begin birding, but aren’t sure how to get started,” says Trista Hindman, Interpreter at Hobcaw Barony and lead instructor for the course. The hope for this class is to spark a love for not only identifying birds, but also for their behaviors, habitats and the many species connected to each.

Participants of “Birding for Beginners” will gain basic knowledge and learn about important resources to use in order to feel more confident in their birding skills. Registration is required by calling the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center at 843-546-4623.
