How did you learn about the Murrells Inlet area?

I grew up in Bishopville and we spent our summer vacations at Crescent Beach, which is located in the North Myrtle Beach area.

We used to come down to Murrells Inlet to eat at Lee's Inlet Kitchen.

As I got older, I had friends in Garden City after attending a retreat there.

When my husband and I moved to this area in 1987, we chose to live in Murrells Inlet on the creek. I love the creek and everything about Murrells Inlet.

How did you get involved with Murrells Inlet 2020?

My mother, Sue Peters, is a former board member of the organization and I met executive director Sue Sledz then.

In 2011, I saw Sue Sledz and asked her about the Race for the Inlet because I enjoy running.

They were talking about doing away with the event and Sue asked me to help with it.

We threw it together in a month and a half. I don't know how we did it.

We had double the participation and double the proceeds from the year before.

The following year, there were board openings and Sue asked me if I was interested.

I started serving on the board in 2012 and I have been the Race chairperson since.

The event was our biggest fundraiser last year with about 700 people participating.

When MI2020 approached me, I wanted to be part of the organization because I love the creek and I could see the progress they made over the years improving the Inlet.

What would you like people to know about the Race?

It will be on Saturday, March 29, at 8 a.m.

The Race starts and ends at Morse Park Landing on Highway 17 Business in Murrells Inlet and proceeds benefit MI2020.

It is on the weekend before the Cooper River Bridge Run, so we call it the “tune up.”

I love the Race because it is a great family event.

We have an 8K run and an 8K walk, which are both timed.

That is just short of five miles.

New this year, we also have a 5K race and a 5K walk, which are timing optional.

Runners who have timing chips could qualify for awards including overall winners for the 8K and 5K races, male and female overall winners, as well as prizes for age division winners.

We welcome people to bring strollers, and even dogs if they are friendly and on a leash.

With what other groups have you been active?

I am an animal lover and I help at All 4 Paws, Ark Animal Hospital and St. Frances Animal Center with annual free shot clinics.

I also try to find homes for dogs when I can.

Can you tell me about your family?

My husband Gene is now a partner with Kellaher, Connell and Connor.

My mother, Sue Peters, lives next door to us.

I also have two sisters who have second homes here, Margy Smith and Kathy VanDyke.

Also living nearby are my nephew Scott and my in-laws.
