Bellefield Plantation tour

Belle Baruch, daughter of Wall Street financier Bernard Baruch, didn’t leave long term instructions for her 1937 home at Hobcaw Barony, which is owned by The Belle W. Baruch Foundation. A trust created by Belle in 1964 preserved the 16,000-acre property for research and education in perpetuity, but her home has been vacant since 2003, awaiting restoration. Limited opportunities to visit the unfurnished home and grounds of Bellefield Plantation are now available. Richard Camlin, a Senior Interpreter with the Belle W. Baruch Foundation, stated “Bellefield Plantation is one of my favorite places at Hobcaw Barony to walk in winter. I can see why Belle didn’t want a home anywhere else at Hobcaw for its sheer privacy and beauty.”

Participants can tour the house, the grounds, view the pond and see what Belle called “the friendliest woods in the world.”

Hobcaw Barony “Behind the Scenes” tour

Hobcaw Barony is a private 16,000-acre research reserve and is open on a weekly basis for visitors to learn the history, ecology and research of the property. Many visitors first see Hobcaw by participating in the 2 hour introductory tour for a glimpse of what is hiding behind the inconspicuous gate. A 3-hour expanded tour of the property now offers an opportunity to experience more than what is seen on the introductory tour. The bus will stop to allow participants to take short walks and for photography. Participants are asked to come prepared with proper shoes and clothing for the elements. Featured stops include North Inlet salt marsh, grounds of Bellefield Plantation, Friendfield Village and the main floor of Hobcaw House.

Reservations are required for both tours and can be made at 843-546-4623.
