County Council: Lowe’s Foods store to have 12-foot high “L” on wall sign

A new Lowe’s Foods store in Pawleys Island will have a 12-foot high “L” on its sign.

Georgetown County Council passed third and final reading of an ordinance amendment Tuesday for Pawleys Market to establish signage criteria for the development under construction on the corner of the South Causeway and Highway 17.

Boyd Johnson, planning director for the county, requested the last-minute change to the amendment because the developer’s plans included the 12-foot “L” on the store’s wall sign.

Johnson said the developer had submitted criteria for signs for Pawleys Market,including a 3-foot height limit for signs.

“He didn’t realize that 36 inches was in the criteria,” Johnson said.

“It sounds like a huge letter, but when you see it on the building it looks right.”

County Council member Bob Anderson, who represents the Pawleys Island area, was concerned during the meeting Tuesday that this large letter on the Lowe’s Foods sign could create a precedent for other developments.

“If we do this, what if the next development wants to put up a sign with 12-foot letters and it has 15 letters in its name?” Anderson said.

Johnson said he and the planning staff are not concerned about setting a precedent because this is a planned development and each one is reviewed individually.

“On this building it looks right, but on a smaller building it would look horrible and we would not recommend approval for that by County Council. We can tailor our approvals to a particular building,” Johnson said.

He added that this exception is only for the anchor tenant and secondary tenants will be limited to the three-foot height restriction for their building signs.

Other business

Council approved second reading of an ordinance to rezone approximately 1.9 acres for an addition to Low Country Community Church located at 4430 Murrells Inlet Road in Murrells Inlet. The zoning will change from General Commercial and General Residential to General Residential.

Council approved second reading of an ordinance to amend the boundaries of the Cancer Center Planned Development by adding one parcel and rezoning from General Commercial to Planned Development. The property is located at 31 Jessamine Avenue, on the corner of Jessamine and North Fraser streets. In addition, Council agreed to change the name of the Planned Development to the Yawkey Medical Park.

Council appointed Daniel J. Drost to serve on the Georgetown County Airport Commission. Drost will complete an unexpired term of service that will end on March 15, 2017. Drost was recommended by Anderson and submitted an application for service.

Vital Care EMS Inc. was approved for an Ambulance Franchise Agreement and will operate its patient transport services within Georgetown County.
