I have had several friends have babies and some who are about to. So, I am about to impart some serious baby-having wisdom.
Remember that it takes nine months to cook a baby, so give yourself at least that long to recover, adjust and regain your pre-baby body. You are now responsible for a person. Babies are cute but they are people too. You now have one to care for, this is a big deal and can be overwhelming.
Listen to me, only do the household chores that really bother you. Home perfection is not a reality. Now is the time to get over it. If dishes in the sink bother you, do that. For me it was dirty floors. Set the timer three times a day for 15 minutes and accomplish what you can in those time periods. That is more realistic than a perfectly clean house, the goal is a livable house.
Take a shower and get dressed every morning. This one act will drastically change everything about your attitude. It may take an effort to do this, but trust me, itís worth it.
Here is where itís about to get good. Make a list of things you could use some help with, so when someone says ďwhat can I do to help?Ē you have an answer. Not sure what should go on that list? Here are some ideas. Have someone pick up groceries, milk, diapers, etc. If you have older kids, ask them for craft ideas or play dates for them. Let someone deliver you dinner or take out.
It is not a failing to need help or admit that you need help. The only failure is not admitting you need help. And, here is the truth, people who love you want to express that love by helping you. By telling them you are fine and donít need help you are denying their love. The expression, it is better to give than to receive, applies here as well. You have just poured out everything to have and care for a baby and possibly other children, allow someone to pour into you. You cannot care for your baby and family on empty, just like a car cannot drive without gas.
Ladies, if you get nothing else from this, remember, do your best and forget the rest.
