Winter weather round two on the way

  • Tuesday, February 11, 2014

A Winter Storm Warning is in place from 7 p.m. tonight until Thursday for inland areas of Georgetown and Horry Counties and all of Williamsburg County.

In the warning area, rain today will turn to sleet tonight and then freezing rain by Wednesday morning.

* Accumulations... one half to three-quarters of an inch of ice... along with sleet accumulations up to one tenth of an inch.

* Impacts... travel conditions may become hazardous as sleet develops tonight and then extremely dangerous in freezing rain on Wednesday. Widespread downed trees and power lines may lead to long periods of power outages.

* Winds... northeast 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

* Temperatures... falling into the lower 30s.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

People across the region should be prepared for severe winter weather conditions. Dress warmly and make sure your car is in good running order and has been properly winterized. It is highly recommended that you take a winter weather survival kit if you must travel. Prepare generators with plenty of fuel in case ice leads to long power outages.

Along the coastal areas of the Grand Strand, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued. The National Weather Service says sleet and freezing rain are possible in these areas also but accumulation should be a tenth-of-an-inch or less of ice.

Schools are operating on a normal schedule today. We will let you know when a decision is made about Wednesday.
