Georgetown police issue fraud alert

  • Tuesday, February 4, 2014

The City of Georgetown was contacted by a customer on Front Street who received a phone call informing them that their electric account was in a temporary ‘hold’ and would be disconnected in 30 minutes if they did not call 866-218-5902 to make arrangements for payment.

The caller did not identify herself as a City of Georgetown employee and she had a foreign accent, police said.

The customer called the number and spoke to someone else (also with a foreign accent) who attempted to arrange a payment. The customer did not give them any personal information and reported the incident.

If anyone receives a telephone call like this they are asked not to respond to the caller and notify their local law enforcement agency. The Georgetown Police Department’s telephone number is 545-4300.
