John Evans

Mr. John Leslie Evans, Jr., 64, passed away on Sunday, December 29, 2013. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church at 1605 S. Fraser St. He was laid to rest on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Greenwood.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., Mr. Evans was the son of the late John Leslie Evans, Sr. and Onie Burns Evans. He was a retired Lt. J.G. of the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam. Mr. Evans was a paralegal in Georgetown and worked as a lobbyist in Washington, DC. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was the widower of Ann Massengill Evans. Mr. Evans was also preceded in death by his stepson, Michael.

Surviving are his caregiver and friend, Les Cotton; his daughter, Vanessa Sharon of Tampa, Fla.; his stepson, Jim Sughure of Raleigh, NC; his stepdaughter, Heather Yates of Greenwood; his sisters, Ruth Evans and Sara Morton, both of Mebane, NC; three grandchildren; three nephews; one niece; and good friend, Sanaa Rizek of Nazareth, Israel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Evan’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church, 1605 S. Fraser St., Georgetown, SC 29440.

Rubin Simmons

Rubin Simmons 102, of the Sampit community of Georgetown died on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at New Hope United Methodist Church conducted by Bishop Willie Greene. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery. The remains will lie in state in the sanctuary of the church on Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Mr. Simmons was born on June 6, 1911 in Charleston, S.C. a son of Mr. Frank Simmons and Mrs. Mary Simmons (both deceased).

Survivors include his son, Rubin Simmons Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA.; one sister, Mrs. Lucretia Bennett of Burlington, NJ.; two special care givers; Mrs. Shirley Drayton, and Mrs. Sarah Green both of Georgetown, SC.

Funeral services are entrusted to Wilds Funeral Home LLC.

Kelly Wilson

Kelly Marie Williams Wilson, 45, wife of Daniel R. Ackerman, Jr., passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on December 15, 1968, in Syracuse, NY, she was a daughter of Jacqueline Burdick and the late Kenneth Darwin Williams. Kelly loved the Lord with all of her heart and was a caregiver by nature. She enjoyed crocheting, taking care of others and had a great love for animals.

Survivors include her husband of Andrews; her mother of Georgetown; three children, James C. Wilson, Jr. of Andrews, and Ashly Wilson and Lisa Howard both of Georgetown; two grandchildren, Cooper H. Hunt and Jonathan J. Howard; one brother, Larry Lambert of Georgetown; two sisters, Janet Berry (Oscar) of Oswego, NY and Jacqueline Sanders (Charles) of Georgetown; an uncle, Edward Bivens of NC; several half- brothers and sisters; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Browne; and father-in-law, John H. Wilson, Sr.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2014 in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the graveside.

Graham Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge of the arrangements.
