Finances and membership occupied center court Jan. 6 as the Garden City Beach Community Association kicked off 2014.
The group, which promotes the community and works with two counties to mow its entryways and provide street lighting to its streets, is hard at work preparing its request to Georgetown County for reimbursement for mowing within that county.
Applications for A-tax funding from Georgetown County are due Feb. 1.
Horry County reimbursement requests are not due until June.
The beach association requests some $5,800 from Georgetown County and $15,000 from Horry County, although neither county is required to meet those funding requests. But even as the money requests rise, so too, do the costs.
Treasurer Marlin Evans told the board that this year Georgetown County costs exceeded funding by some $280. In Horry, the costs were underfunded by some $40. The cost difference is because just a small portion of Garden City Beach’s streets are in Georgetown County.
The beach association gains a large portion of its discretionary income, which funds a spring and fall community gathering, the Christmas tree lighting, and ornaments and banners that identify the community, from business and individual memberships.
