Dec. 9 was a great day at the Choppee Community Center and a great day for Georgetown County.

State and local leaders were on hand to cut the ribbon and officially open the doors to the Teen After School Center at the Choppee Community Center Complex.

The Teen After School Center (TASC) is an initiative of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. TASCs are daily after-school programs based in local churches, community centers, and other public buildings across the state, and are staffed by employees and volunteers with a heart for youth.

The program is focused on providing a safe and positive environment for teens after school.

The TASC Program at the Choppee Community Complex currently hosts 26 participants who are focusing on enhancing their coping skills while increasing their academic, vocational and employability skills.

They will be exposed to career opportunities in a variety of high skill careers and interact with professionals who will mentor them on best practices for developing their passions and aptitudes into productive and successful careers. TASC facilitators, Helen Canteen and Joseph Enoch, are proud of the accomplishments of the students.

Parents interested in enrolling their child in the program should contact Dr. Mary Rice-Crenshaw, program director at 803-334-8578 or email mamaskidsinc@yahoo.com.
