Carvers Bay High School’s basketball team made history on Thursday, becoming the first Georgetown County team to play in the tip-off game of the Beach Ball Classic.

Bears coach Jeff Mezzatesta said he and his players were honored to play in the “prestigious basketball tournament in the United States.”

“It means everything to us” to play, Mezzatesta said.

“This is what we’ve been working for for years in our program, to be here. I’m proud of my kids.

Senior Darius Williams said it was a privilege to play in the tournament.

“It a big deal to me. I just enjoy it and have fun, whether we win or not.”

Carvers Bay held off Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 54-46. The Saints kept the game close early, but the Bears built a double-digit lead by halftime. Christian Academy wouldn’t go away and cut the lead down to four point as time wound down, but had trouble finding the basket in the final minutes.

“We like playing the first game, we set the tone,” said senior Chris Carter. “We came out sluggish at first but by the start of the second half we got better.”

Eaddy Moore had 10 points and five rebounds to lead the Bears.

Darius Williams had nine points, five rebounds and four steals; Carter had eight points; Terry Bromell had seven points and two steals; Dary Goss had six points, five rebounds and four steals; Tyrek Reed had five points; and Arkel Williams had four points and six rebounds.

“Every game I feel like we’re getting better. Hopefully by region or playoffs, we’ll be ready,” Darius Williams said.

Carvers Bay was coming off a 57-41 loss to Forsythe County (N.C.) Day School on Monday in the Panther Classic at Carolina Forest High School.

Darius Williams led the Bears with 16 points and four rebounds.

Goss had eight points and nine rebounds; Arkel Williams had six points and three blocks; Carter had five points; and Moore had four rebounds.

Georgetown and Waccamaw will play at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Beach Ball Classic.

The Bulldogs are coming off a 69-54 loss to Barbourville, Ky., in the Panther Classic on Monday.
