A Pawleys Island man has been arrested in connection with a kidnapping and robbery that Georgetown police have been investigating.
Willie Edwards, 33, is charged with armed robbery, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, resisting arrest, kidnapping and carjacking.
Georgetown Police Capt. Nelson Brown says the incident began the night of Dec. 23 in the 100 block of Orange Street approached the male victim and produced a handgun.
“The subject got into the back seat of the victim’s car and demanded money. The victim drove the subject to the ATM at Wells Fargo Bank on Front Street and the victim withdrew money out of the ATM machine and gave it to the suspect,” Brown said.
The suspect then told the victim to drive back down Front Street toward Orange Street.
“The victim jumped out of the vehicle and the subject fled on foot when the vehicle came to a stop,” said Brown.
Photos from the ATM machine were released by police which helped lead to Edward’s arrest.
He remains in jail awaiting a bond hearing.
Brown said it does not look like Edwards is responsible for a robbery and attempted robbery that occurred Thursday evening.
Brown said the first incident occurred at about 6 p.m. He said a man left the Big Tuna and was walking in the area of Augustus Carolina in the 800 block of Front Street when he was approached by a black male. The suspect said he was robbing the victim.
After the robbery, the suspect fled on foot.
The victim’s wife, on Facebook, said he was unharmed in the incident.
A short while later, a woman who was using the walk-in ATM at Bank of America on Highmarket Street was approached by a man who attempted to rob her, Brown said.
He said when the woman started screaming, the suspect fled without getting any money.
Brown said those two victims said Edwards does not match the description of the suspec in their cases.
