The Cameron Ahalt Spirit Award is presented annually by Cameron's family in memory of the young Scout who passed away unexpectedly in 2008. The purpose of the award is to recognize a Scout who exemplifies the ideals of Scouting through his dedication and leadership. This year's recipient was Life Scout Bobby Walters of Troop 360 in Pawleys Island.

The District Award of Merit is the highest award that can be bestowed on a Scouter by a District. It is awarded based on achievements attained through years of leadership at the unit and district level. This year Black River District recognized two leaders with this prestigious award.

Mike Benton serves as Senior Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 360 in Pawleys Island. He is also the founding Crew Committee Chair of Crew One in Pawleys Island. In addition he serves as the District Camping Chair responsible for district camporees and events.

Larry Penn serves as District Commissioner for Black River District. He also has served for several years as Pack Trainer for Pack 323 in Pawleys Island.
