One man is dead and another hospitalized after a pickup truck and 18-wheeler collided on Highway 51 this morning.

The accident happened at about 11:50 a.m. near the intersection with Hesterville Road, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

He said the driver of the Chevrolet pickup was northbound when he crossed the center line and hit an International log truck head on.

Collins said the 18-wheeler was carrying a full load at the time of the crash.

Deputy Coroner Chase Ridgeway identified the pickup driver as 70-year-old Ben Prew Jr. of Nesmith. An autopsy will be conducted Thursday to determine the cause of death and to try to figure out if there was a medical reason Prew crossed the center line.

The 18-wheeler driver, Arthur Johnson, age 50, was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
