I am writing this letter to express my appreciation to the staff at the Georgetown County Sheriff’s office. Most of us do not consider the fact that the personnel employed by the County Sheriff perform many functions in the county. I am referring to the effort to reissue the permits required to allow residents to utilize the Georgetown County Sheriff’s office shooting range.
Several years ago the Five Rivers Association approached Sheriff Lane Crib and proposed that the range be made available the public for recreational firearms use. An agreement was reached provided that certain rules were followed. Regulations for range use were written and posted and those desiring use of the range were required to apply for a permit from the Sheriff’s office to use the facility.
This facility has recently been upgraded to better serve the Sheriff’s department and local law enforcement. Prior to reopening the range for public use those desiring access are required to go to the Sheriff’s office and apply for a new permit.
The new procedure requires a photograph (taken in the Sheriff’s office) and a background check also done in the office while you wait. As one of the original applicants for range access (I had badge number 002) I went to the office to apply for a new badge. I understood that I would get a new number and that didn’t matter since my desire was access to the range.
The process of acquiring the permit is the reason for this letter. I would like to express my appreciation to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s department for the polite, professional, and efficient manner in which they processed the many applicants the afternoon I was there for my permit. Everyone involved was polite, and took the time to clearly explain the procedure to each applicant. It is rare indeed in today’s hurry up world that one encounters such a pleasant professional attitude. My thanks to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s office staff members involved in this procedure.
