With the bright morning sun at their backs, runners and walkers competed in the eighth annual “Run 'til Cows Come Home” 5K in Pawleys Island on Saturday at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church.
Leading the pack at the beginning and almost never looking back was William Daniels, 13, of Pawleys Island, who finished in 19:19.
Daniels represented South Carolina in the 800-meter event in August of the Hershey North American Finals in Hershey, Pa. It was the largest such youth program in the United States and Canada.
Local race committee chairman, Gerry Vorhees, said the race brought in approximately $12,000 for two nonprofits, Teach My People and The Outreach Farm.
“We are very excited about the business and community turnout to support our event,” Vorhees said. “We feel it was a very successful day. From our title sponsor, Eggs Up Grill, to all the families and friends that came out to support us, we are extremely grateful.”
The race committee included Voorhees, Eric Spatz, Ansley Wentzky, Steve Lowe, Ebie Stover, Jessica Grover, Gregory Badgett, Terri Lottchea, Jennifer Averette, Megan Margaret Tracy and Christine Fette.
The Outreach Farm helps combat hunger by supporting Lowcountry charities with a quality protein source, while telling about nutrition and encouraging healthy choices.
Teach My People instructs children in the Waccamaw public schools to overcome academic, economic and social challenges by providing Christ-centered programs for spiritual, educational and emotional health.
