Pawleys Island, S.C. — A smell of smoke in a hallway led to the evacuation of Waccamaw Elementary School on Thursday afternoon.
Midway Fire Rescue Chief Doug Eggiman said firefighters responded to the school on Waverly Road in Pawleys Island at 2:39 p.m. An investigation led to the discovery of some burnt insulation, which caused the smoky smell.
“The school district staff handled everything appropriately” by evacuating the school, Eggiman said.
“The safety of students and staff has to be the most important thing.”
Because the fire call came in so close to when students were going home, Georgetown County sheriff’s deputies arrived to direct traffic.
“They did a great job making sure everything was accessible for our units when they arrived on scene,” Eggiman said.
The school district immmeidately sent employees to the school to fix the insulation.
