A Pawleys Island man died today, about 12 hours after being struck by a hit and run driver.
Now, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help in locating the driver who fled from the accident that occurred late Tuesday night on Higwhay 17 in front of the Sonic restaurant.
Coroner Kenny Johnson identified the victim as 57-year-old Patrick Loper of Geney Lane. He died at 11:47 a.m. today but Johnson was not notified until 3:30 p.m.
Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said around 11 p.m. Loper was on a moped and was involved in an accident.
He was in the roadway because of that accident and was struck by a vehicle. It was that driver who fled the area.
Collins said based on debris left at the scene, the driver may have been driving a Honda Civic. It may have been a model from 2006-2011, Collins said. Possibly a four-door vehicle.
He is asking anyone who may have seen anything or may have spotted a Honda Civic with recent damage to notify the Highway Patrol.
“We need tips, no matter how small,” he said.
Tips can be shared by dialing *HP on a cell phone or by calling 843-661-4700.
