Like the phoenix of Greek mythology that rises from the ashes, Front Street took on a new life generated by 650 enthusiastic runners competing in the third annual Bridge2Bridge event on Saturday. New overall men's and women's records were set during the three road races: half marathon, a 12K and 5K. Half marathon record-setting paces were delivered by Tom Clifford of Wilmington, N.C., in 1:13:43, and Katie Gane of Atlanta, Ga., in 1:24:51. Last year's half marathon winner among men was Frank M Pepp of Little River, in 1:21:08, compared to the 2011 inaugural race leader Jonathan Kinsey of Myrtle Beach who finished in 1:18:31. Last year's overall female leader was Misty White, Myrtle Beach, in 1:32:19, compared to the 2011 pacesetter, Donna Anderson of Pawleys Island, in 1:33:53. Ward Daniels, 14, of Georgetown won this year's 5K in 20:32.69. He was one of seven Georgetown teens in the race. The runners started and finished at the Clock Tower on Front Street. The course went into the East Bay Park area, where runners had views of Winyah Bay and a glimpse of the two bridges that half marathon and 12K runners would have cross to get to the north side, before doing a U-turn to cross back over the Black and Waccamaw rivers. Half marathon runners eventually headed toward the southern end of Georgetown, going over the Sampit River bridge into Maryville, returning northward over the Sampit River to the finish line. There were YMCA Kid's Fun Run events, and Bil Krauss provided musical entertainment and humor in Francis Marion Park at Front and Broad streets, where awards ceremonies were held. This was Krauss' third year performing. The successful fundraiser assisted the Georgetown County United Way, the Georgetown Business Association, and the Iota Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Scholarship Fund. Proceeds from the sale of “Bridge the Gap” T-shirts went to the Front Street Fire Relief Fund. †
