Gov. Nikki Haley signed an order Tuesday that will allow the City of Georgetown to apply for up to $1 million in grants to help pay to repair or replace public property damaged or destroyed by the Sept. 25 Front Street fire.
Mayor Jack Scoville said a list of damaged property will have to be compiled but he knows it will include things such as the Harborwalk boardwalk, melted street lights in front of the burned buildings, and damaged sidewalks.
“Luckily the Harborwalk did not receive a lot of damage,” Scoville said. “This will be for almost any fire-caused expense to the taxpayer. The good news is most of the city’s costs will be covered.” Scoville said he is unsure if the grant will cover expenses such as overtime pay.
