James Mercer

A 53-year-old Georgetown man was arrested early today, after allegedly shooting a friend in the buttocks.
James Dewey Mercer, better known as Peanut Mercer, of 155 Dutch Court, Georgetown is charged with Attempted Murder after the Saturday evening incident.
Deputies responded at about 8 p.m. after Mercer called 911 stating he shot his friend, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Cuthbertson.
“When deputies arrived on scene, they learned Mercer ran in the wooded area behind his residence.  Deputies also learned the victim was taken to another location by a friend where he was picked up by EMS and transported to the Georgetown Hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” Cuthbertson states.
The victim told deputies he and Mercer had been drinking together all day and began arguing shortly after 7 p.m. which was followed by a physical altercation.
“The victim left the residence at 155 Dutch Court and began walking towards his residence. Mercer went back into his residence and came back out with a rifle.  The victim stated it was at this point when Mercer shot at him striking him in the buttocks,” Cuthbertson states.
Mercer was arrested booked in jail at about 2 a.m. Sunday.
