Editorial: Relearn ages-old lessons

For those of us who are Christians and Jews, this time of year carries special significance. For Christians, today is the day that Christ died on the cross. On Easter Sunday, Christians believe that he rose from the dead and that his death and resurrection paid the cost of our sins.
Our Jewish brothers and sisters don’t share that same belief, but nonetheless this time of year is holy with special days.
For all of us, regardless of our religious beliefs, there are old lessons to learn.
Follow the rules.
Worship God.
Do good things for other people.
There’s a reminder too about not rushing to judgment: “He who is without sin, cast the first stone.”
There are Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, pretty dresses and shoes and coats and ties on our children and grandchildren.
But perhaps the ages-old lessons of our religious teaching should be revisited, this Friday and Saturday in temple and Sunday in church.
Goodness, sacrifice, mercy, love, doing good things for other people …
Just about all of us know “the rules.”
It’s up to us whether or not we follow the rules we learned at our parents’ side.
