A woman and her boyfriend escaped a mobile home fire that appears to have been deliberately set early Saturday.
Firefighters were sent to Hardee Street in Andrews at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
A 29-year-old woman said she and her boyfriend were asleep in a back bedroom when she was awakened by footsteps in the hallway.
She said someone then shined a flashlight in her face.
When her boyfriend asked who it was, the intruder slammed the bedroom door. Moments later, the couple smelled smoke.
They saw a pile of clothing burning in the living room so they grabbed a few belongings and ran outside.
The front of the mobile home was engulfed in flames.
The owner of the trailer said the electricity had been disconnected and no one was supposed to be living there.
The woman said she thinks a 29-year-old Andrews man she knows may be responsible but no charges have been filed.
A man from the 800 block of Columbus Road said his 15-year-old grandson stole his dirt bike from his shed May 26.
The man said he saw the lock on the shed had been damaged and he later found the dirt bike in the woods.
He said his grandson had put the bike back together because it had been in pieces inside the shed.
The man said his grandson had to be taken to the hospital for injuries from an accident.
He said the teen had rashes that looked like they were caused by scraping the road. The teen says he fell out of a tree stand.
The teen denied taking the bike.
The two that got away
A Georgetown police officer clocked a vehicle speeding on the Maryville bridge Sunday morning and initiated a traffic stop.
The driver did not stop. Instead, he turned onto Elizabeth Street then onto Loblolly.
The driver finally stopped at the corner of Loblolly and Leland Streets and then jumped out and ran into the woods.
The officer gave chase but while the pursuit was taking place, the passenger of the vehicle drove away.
Other officers responded to the scene but the man on foot and the one in the car were not found.
Theft in front of police
An 18-year-old Kensington man was busted for shoplifting after trying to steal from Walmart right in front of a deputy.
The deputy said he was in the store at about 3:45 a.m. May 23 when he saw the man placing items inside his clothing.
The man had a BB pistol inside a pocket and a pellet rifle in the leg of his pants.
After the suspect was detained, two bottles of Mucinex decongestant were also found concealed in his clothing.
The medicine “is commonly abused by taking more than the recommended dose,” the report states.
The man was taken to the Detention Center where it was learned he had been released from jail two weeks prior.
Information is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
