Erin Spatz: The element of surprise can be very effective

  • Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Last week I took the kids to the farmers market, in Pawleys Island. We had a really great time. The kids were really into helping pick out the fruit and vegetables. They enjoyed the vendors, who were kind and let the kids try bites of different foods.

I was so proud of their manners and their willingness to help out.† I had a ďMommy Moment of Bliss.Ē These are moments in which, the dreams you had about having kids before you actually had them, are coming true. You know, like how your kids will always get along and enjoy every activity you plan for them. Those are MMOBís.† They donít happen often, but when they do itís important to acknowledge them.

We left the farmers market and went over to Ericís office. Everyone had to potty, so we all went in, and said hi to everyone. All made a trip to the bathroom, and all got back into the car.

I am still unclear as to what happened, but my best guess is that when they went into the bathroom they got stung by the grumpy bug. We were driving home discussing what we planned to eat for lunch and thinking of fun ways to cook our fresh farmers market food. And out of no where, started by no one, a loud massive fight occurred.

Since I have zero idea what happened, or where it came from, I was at a loss on how to stop it. So, being the well controlled mom that I am, I crossed two lanes of traffic, pulled into a parking lot and threw the car in park.
I jumped out the driverís side door, yanked open the kidís door, and said in my most loving voice ďWhat is wrong with you people? No more talking! Silence until we get home.Ē

Now, I have threatened to pull the car over, but that was the first time I had actually done that.
I wish with my whole heart I could have taken the kidsí picture when I openend their door. Four pairs of eyes as big a saucers and four mouths hanging open. It was a teeny bit funny.

I calmly got back in the van and drove home. We drove home in complete silence. Which for my kids, is a miracle. The rest of our day was lovely.
Although, I did learn how effective the element of surprise can be.
